Colory Engine [UPD]

Most modern engines have the cylinder identification codes displayed on the engine itself. A bright light which illuminates the cylinder identification is a safe and convenient way to know the head or heads you are working on. The cylinder identification codes can also be found on the engine block itself.

Some of the first engines to be used in the automotive industry were stamped with their cylinder color coding. The scarcity of these engines today is a testament to their value and rarity. Each cylinder is stamped with a unique code. These codes were an indication of the cylinder's performance. More power usually meant going for one color, less power meant going with another. Today, the color codes are mainly used on American made engines for the purpose of identification. Most early engines did not have any sort of display, or gauges, so there was no need to keep track of the cylinder identification.

Following are the cylinder identification codes for engines.

BRAS - Blue Red & White

RED - Red

BLUE - Blue

GRAY - Gray

YELLOW - Yellow

GREEN - Green

Some original engines have the cylinder color codes inlaid into the heads. The cylinder color codes are often painted on the block in a small area near each cylinder. There are many different ways to do this. Some engines have a small relief on the head casting. The cylinder color codes then are painted into the relief on the casting and are then inlaid into the head. Some engines have the cylinder color codes used to inlay the head casting using enameling which is then applied to the top of the head casting. The new method of inlaying cylinder colors into the cylinder head casting is called Lighted Inlay. The lighted inlay is the process of filling a hole or recessing area with a colored resin which is then cured, and then a cylinder color is applied to the cured resin. The cylinder color is applied by first filling the hole with clear resin, which then becomes the filling. This is followed by the application of a thin layer of clear resin to seal any bubbles. The colored resin is then applied to the top of the resin and cured.
