Yes Alan. As a reponse to 'critical listening' I would not say that there are not subtleties inherent in the playing of music. I would say that we can all find them in almost every genre and combination of instruments, but only possession of such an ability allows us the insight to perceive those subtleties. The difference between those who can and those who cannot is their ability to articulate those nuances, and to feel, 'I understand.'
Another aspect of critical listening is simply to take notice of what is going on around you all the time. That is, while you might be listening to yourself, you are listening to yourself with someone else, and sometimes even listening to something else while you do that.
And, while we are talking about listening, I would like to expand on my suggestion that an audiophile should listen to the music with the least amount of anxiety or embarrassment as possible. I believe that while listening one should take in the entirety of the recording. (I have found it very hard to listen to music in this way and to hold opinions about a performance. Even listening to my dearest songs is like listening to a recording of me rambling or shopping for groceries. You are subjected to my speech patterns, my emotions and sometimes even the environment which contains me - but not to my music.)
One of the most reassuring things about CD audio is the fact that it allows one to hear the absolutely maximum amount of details in a recording, and to keep the volume down. While listening do all that you can do to keep your focus on the music.
If listening is something you would like to master, I would suggest becoming familiar with the following figure. (Sorry for the jargon, but it is helpful in describing a general guideline for listening.)
So I've established what I think listening should encompass. I have a theory of knowledge that I have been creating for the last 6 years, what I refer to as "Concert Understanding" and I am about to make a formal effort to write it down and make it knowable in the true scientific way. [ d2c66b5586
