Robert D. McCallum and John A. Daugherty are veterans of the battleships and aircraft carrier. Robert D. McCallum served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 through 1989, and commanded several warships. John A. Daugherty was in the U.S. Navy from 1971 through 2004, and served on numerous warships. Both authors have provided an extensive research background for their studies.
The book includes a comprehensive bibliography, which is included at the end of the book in reverse alphabetical order. It includes articles that cover many aspects of a warship's design, development, and combat history.
A battle between the giant airplanes and surface ships of the First World War laid the groundwork for the modern battleship, and the evolution of this weapon can be followed in this book. The aircraft carrier, introduced with the First World War, is the most revolutionary weapon since the cannon and musket. Today, the aircraft carrier is the most advanced battleship in the world. More than a hundred of the U.S. Navy's largest warships have served as aircraft carriers, including the U.S.S. Independence and U.S.S. Saratoga.
The book also explores smaller and specialized warships, including submarines, patrol craft, auxiliaries, and destroyers. It features important warships from the navies of Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Some of the most famous warships in history are featured in this book. The British Dreadnought revolutionized warfare, and the ship's evolution was so dramatic that it has been considered the genesis of the modern battleship. The Japanese Yamato class supercarrier was built before the United States even entered World War II, and it was the largest battleship ever constructed. The United States built the mighty aircraft carrier USS Hornet, with its massive flight deck and long-range aircraft. The ship was the largest carrier ever built until the first American supercarrier, the USS Yorktown, was constructed.
The long dominance of the navies of Europe as a military power started to break down in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The German and Austro-Hungarian Empires were destroyed as a result of World War I. The Royal Navy had maintained its power at sea, but it could not compete with the more modern navies of the US, Japan, and France. At the same time, the countries of the Western Pacific were also looking to become more modern and powerful. To meet these new challenges, Britain and the United States embarked on a massive shipbuilding program, and designed and built warships with increasingly powerful guns and armor.
